A Chat With: An Alumnus, Roan Laenen

An Alumnus
Roan Laenen - MA Creative Advertising, Falmouth, UK

Master
I’m doing an MA in Creative Advertising at Falmouth University, United Kingdom. There are two tracks within this master, and I chose to do Art Direction (as opposed to Copywriting).

Experience so far
I'm really happy! The master definitely lives up to my expectations, even though I’ve only been studying here for a month. The course coordinators, Rob and Chris, both worked in the advertising industry for over 30 years in London’s leading agencies. This reflects in how they teach – they’re very knowledgeable and insightful, but also provide the necessary critique to go that extra mile. Also, Falmouth is a beautiful place to live in and I love English culture in general.
Application Process
In the UK, quite a few universities work with a ‘rolling admission’, which means they don’t have a specific deadline but accept students over a long period, until the course is full. I handed in my admission at the end of may last year, and got accepted mid-june. It was quite difficult as they required a portfolio in addition to a motivation letter and list of grades. Luckily I had done some creative things next to EUC, which I was able to put in my portfolio (photography, logo designs etc).

Why this Master
Falmouth University is ranked no 1 Arts University in the UK, which led me to look into this specific master. The MA Creative Advertising has been running for around 15 years already, and the graduates of the programme get in exactly the type of agencies I’d love to work in. Furthermore, the master is focused on getting the right skillset to work in the advertising industry, and is therefore highly creative. In the Netherlands, a master like this would perhaps not be ‘academic’ enough. This further influenced me to pursue a master in either the US or the UK, as they value such creative masters higher than we do in Holland.

Advice for EUC Students
If you want to do a masters after EUC, my main advice would be – investigate where the graduates of the programme end up and reflect if this is something you aspire to be in the future. If the answer is yes, I believe you will have a good fit with the programme and the people on the course. And if you’re not sure what you want to do yet – don’t stress about it too much. We’re still young, so there’s nothing wrong with taking a gap year to figure things out :-)

Very Inspirational Quote of the Month - Christian van der Veeke

Very Inspirational Quote of the Month This newsletter's Very Inspirational Quote of the Month was picked by Christian van der Veeke: Of Brains and Leaves  Let’s take two children who come from the same milieu, raised in the same way. Let’s take two brothers, put them in the same school, make them do the same exercises. And what will we see? One will do better than the other. There is therefore   an intrinsic difference. And the difference results from this: one of the two is more intelligent, more gifted.  Therefore , you can clearly see that intelligence is unequal. […] Let’s look then at your children and your  therefore . One succeeds better than the other, this is a  fact . If he succeeds better, you say, this is  because  he is more intelligent. Here the explanation becomes obscure. Have you shown another fact that would be the cause of the first? […] By saying “He is more intelligent" you have simply summed up the ideas that te...

Good to Know: The Book Lending Procedure

Book Lending Procedure  This year OSEA Desk Opening Hours are from 9am-8pm. During this time frame, the book lending procedure will work the same as it did last year: you borrow a book and leave your student ID, and bring it back by 8pm. New this year : This year you can additionally study until the building closes but you have to drop your book off at the reception desk rather than the OSEA Desk. If you did that you can pick up your card the next day at the OSEA desk. Otherwise, you will get an entry on the blacklist (note that two entries on the blacklist will get you exempted from the booklending procedure for a whole semester).

Good to Know: First Years Survey

First Years Survey We would like to thank the first year students that filled in the survey about their first couple of weeks. Overall the results were positive but of course there were some complaints. We take these complaints seriously and will address them with the Dean's office.
