A Chat With: An Alumnus - Joia de Jong

An Alumnus Joia de Jong - MSc Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts Erasmus, Rotterdam Master I’m doing an Research Master in Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts in Rotterdam. Experience so far Personally, I am in doubt whether this master is the perfect master for me. The University College environment is a really special environment. So especially in the first months, I had rehab symptoms. I missed the personal interactions between students and teachers, constructive feedback from one person to another and simply the genuine interest in each other. It wasn’t only the environment that I needed to adjust to, but also working incredibly long hours with insane deadlines for research that doesn’t seem relevant. In the beginning, I felt there was too much emphasis upon the arts side of research. I’ve decided for myself that in December I will make a choice whether to continue or not, because then I’ve also followed other courses.  Application Process The applicat...

Second Floor Silence

Second Floor Silence We have received complaints about the noise on the second floor. We would therefore like to remind you that the entire open area on the second floor is designated as a  silent area  (just as the Reading Room on the ground floor), so that all of our students can use te study spots for self-study without being disturbed. EUC will soon add signs to this effect, to help you remind yourselves and/or to help you when you want to point this out to your fellow students. Please use the lounge on the ground floor and the basement area if you want to mingle, phone, chat or just not being concerned too much about causing noise.

A Chat With: An Exchange Student - Willem Lagaaij

An Exchange Student Willem Lagaaij  -  Chulalongkorn, Bangkok Exchange From a young age I have always had the ambition of living abroad for some parts of my life. Although I love the Netherlands, I have always felt it to be quite limiting. I always viewed Holland as this tiny part in this huge world filled with diversity, experiences and opportunities.  Studying at EUC already brought some of this diversity to me, but an exchange is my first opportunity to get a better understanding of this world myself. I chose Asia specifically because it had always been this mysterious hidden world to me. I heard about it all the time, but never actually knew that much about it. Getting the opportunity to live here and call this place home gives me a unique insight in this part of the world.   University The Chulalongkorn University is a special community to be a part of, especially as a white guy. At my University all students are expected to wear a uniform. Althoug...

Very Inspirational Quote of the Month - Christian van der Veeke

Very Inspirational Quote of the Month This newsletter's Very Inspirational Quote of the Month was picked by Christian van der Veeke: Of Brains and Leaves  Let’s take two children who come from the same milieu, raised in the same way. Let’s take two brothers, put them in the same school, make them do the same exercises. And what will we see? One will do better than the other. There is therefore   an intrinsic difference. And the difference results from this: one of the two is more intelligent, more gifted.  Therefore , you can clearly see that intelligence is unequal. […] Let’s look then at your children and your  therefore . One succeeds better than the other, this is a  fact . If he succeeds better, you say, this is  because  he is more intelligent. Here the explanation becomes obscure. Have you shown another fact that would be the cause of the first? […] By saying “He is more intelligent" you have simply summed up the ideas that te...
